Il faro di santa maria di leuca
The Lighthouse of Leuca: The Giant of Finibus Terrae
With its 47 meters in height, towering 120 meters above sea level, the Lighthouse of Santa Maria di Leuca is one of the tallest and most impressive in Europe. Located at the farthest point of Puglia, it is considered a landmark for sailors navigating the waters of the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea, precisely at the point where these two seas meet.
The History of the Lighthouse of Santa Maria di Leuca
The current lighthouse was strongly desired by Frederick II, with the aim of replacing an older structure. The project was entrusted to the engineer Achille Rossi, who oversaw its construction starting in 1864. After two years of work, the Lighthouse of Leuca was inaugurated in 1866, becoming immediately one of the most important landmarks on the Puglian coast.
Today, the lighthouse is not only an icon of commercial shipping but also a symbol of orientation and protection for fishermen and travelers who venture into the waters of Salento.
The Architecture and Technology of the Lighthouse
The Lighthouse of Leuca stands out for its elegant octagonal structure, entirely painted white, making it visible from great distances. Inside, there is a tower with 254 spiral steps leading to the lantern, located on a large circular terrace.
The lantern, with a diameter of 3 meters, is equipped with an optical system capable of projecting a beam of light up to 50 km away. This powerful light signal guides vessels and represents one of the most strategic lighthouses in the Mediterranean.
