The term Leukos was used by Greek sailors to refer to the white cliff that gives its name to what we now call Leuca. It would later become Santa Maria di Leuca, probably due to the cult associated with the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, the land marking the boundary of the Roman territories.
In this strip of land, one can admire towering, jagged cliffs, small golden bays interrupting the low rocks, and the famous karst caves.
Western Side
The Grotta della Stalla is located near the Marchello Promontory. It owes its name to the creativity of fishermen and sailors who used this cove to shelter their boats from the harsh sea conditions.
