Origin of the name and position
Verdusella comes from the local dialect and refers to the intense green of the water that fills this small inlet. You only need to look over the side of the boat to understand: the light-colored seabed and the sunlight mix to create a palette of emerald and turquoise that changes shade with every meter. The fishermen of Leuca have known it by this name for generations, and anyone seeing it for the first time immediately understands why.
The cave is located on the East side (Levante), between the Terradico Cave and the Mannute Cave. Departing from the port, it can be reached in about ten minutes of navigation, after passing the three arches of Cazzafri and the Terradico fissure.

What makes Verdusella special
Verdusella is not a deep and dark cave like others along the coast. It is rather a recess in the cliff, a small protected bay where the rock forms a low roof that shelters it from the sun and wind. The water here is always calmer than outside, and the color — that bright green that gives it its name — is the result of the white sandy bottom just a few meters below the surface.
The side walls are smooth and polished by the sea, with a few tufts of red algae adding contrast to the green of the water. On sunny days, the light enters from the side and creates shimmering reflections on the rocky ceiling, a kind of natural projection that moves to the rhythm of the waves. The seabed is shallow — one meter, one and a half meters — and so transparent that you can see small fish darting among the rocks without even dipping your head in.
Those traveling with children will find Verdusella the ideal spot for a stop: shallow water, no current, and a pleasant temperature even in the early hours of the morning.
How to visit the Verdusella Cave

Verdusella can be reached exclusively by sea. There are no paths or steps from the cliff above. Excursion boats stop for a few minutes, just long enough to admire the color of the water and, if the sea is calm, take a dip in the green.
Those who wish to stay longer can book a private excursion and ask the captain to extend the stop. With a mask and snorkel, you can explore the perimeter of the small bay, discovering crevices and colonies of sea urchins that are not noticeable from the boat.

Frequently Asked Questions about Verdusella Cave
Where is Verdusella Cave located?
On the East side (Levante) of Santa Maria di Leuca, between Terradico Cave and Mannute Cave. Departing from the port, it is reached in about ten minutes of navigation and is recognizable by the intense green color of the water filling the small bay.
Why is it called Verdusella?
The name derives from the Salento dialect and refers to the bright green of the water. The shallow white sandy bottom, combined with sunlight, creates a unique emerald color that has given the cave its name since ancient times.
Can you swim in Verdusella?
Yes, and it is one of the best places along the coast to do so. The water is shallow, calm, and protected by the cliff. When the captain gives the all-clear, you can get off the boat and swim in transparent water about a meter deep.
Is Verdusella Cave suitable for children?
Perfectly. The very shallow seabed, the absence of currents, and the natural protection of the bay make it one of the safest and most peaceful spots for children to swim during the excursion.
Which excursions is it included in?
In the 1 hour and 30-minute East side tour and the complete 3-hour tour covering both sides. Those who prefer a more intimate experience can book a private excursion with an extended stop.
Where do the excursions depart from?
From the Port of Santa Maria di Leuca. The meeting point is the Bar del Porto, where you should arrive 15-30 minutes before departure.
