Origin of the name and position
Sailors returning from Adriatic routes, upon sighting the coast, would shout “Terra vedo e terra dico!” (I see land and I say land!). From that cry, the name Terradico was born: the cave was the first sign that the mainland was near, the point where one could finally catch one’s breath after days of navigation.
Terradico Cave is located on the East side (Levante) of Santa Maria di Leuca, a few minutes of navigation after the Cazzafri Cave. For those departing from the port, it is the second stop along the Adriatic coast, unmistakable due to its shape as a vertical split that cuts the cliff from bottom to top.

What makes Terradico Cave unique

Unlike the other caves in Leuca, Terradico is not a wide cavity with vaults and stalactites. It is a fissure: a long, narrow crack in the rock, several meters high, that opens like an Indian tent set upon the sea. For this reason, it is also called the “Terradico Fissure.”
The water enters from the base and flows along the stone corridor, changing color meter after meter. At the entrance, it is light blue and transparent; the further you go in, it becomes dark green, almost black, because the light only arrives from above, filtered through the fissure. The walls are smooth, polished by water and wind, with streaks of white and gray limestone that draw horizontal lines like the pages of an open book.
When the sea is calm and the sun is high, the light descends like a blade from the opening at the top and illuminates the water from within. It is an effect that lasts only a few minutes, around midday, and one that those who see it do not easily forget.
How to visit the Terradico Cave

Terradico Cave can only be reached by sea. The boat approaches the entrance of the fissure and stops for a few minutes: the space is narrow, so not all vessels can enter. Smaller boats manage to venture in for a few meters, just enough to look up and see the sky reduced to a thin strip between the walls.
Those traveling on a group excursion observe it from the outside, with a stop that allows for photos and an understanding of the split’s shape. Those who book a private excursion can ask the captain to get closer and, if conditions permit, take a swim at the entrance.
Unlike Cazzafri Cave, there isn’t a large space for swimming here. The charm of Terradico is all in the perspective: looking upward from inside the fissure, with the walls tightening and the sky becoming a single line.
