Fresh water born from the rock
On the West side (Ponente) of the Leuca coast, the River’s Cave (Grotta del Fiume) is one of the most fascinating cavities due to a phenomenon that sets it apart from all others: inside, a stream of fresh water gushes out, having traveled through the depths of the karstic promontory before pouring directly into the sea.
This meeting between fresh and salt water is the origin of the cave’s name and generates an effect that is clearly perceived during a boat visit. Approaching the entrance, the water temperature changes significantly, and the surface takes on different shades where the two waters mix. In summer, when the thermal contrast is more marked, swimmers immediately notice the cold currents emerging from the base of the cliff.
Inside the cave

The structure of the River’s Cave is relatively simple: a wide and low opening on the cliff leads to an internal environment where the damp walls shimmer under the light reflected by the water. It doesn’t have the majesty of larger caves, but it possesses an intimate and cozy charm.
What makes the stop memorable is the tactile sensation of the water. Those who dive near the entrance feel the cold threads of the underground spring rising from the seabed—a sensory experience that no other cave on the coast offers in the same way. Local guides say this fresh water comes from the aquifers of the Ciolo Canal, a few kilometers to the north, filtering through the limestone for millennia before reaching the sea.
How to get to the River’s Cave

The River’s Cave is not reachable from the mainland and can only be visited as part of boat excursions. The 1 hour and 30-minute West side tour includes this stop along an itinerary that touches the main cavities of the western side.
Those wishing to explore the opposite side as well can opt for the 3-hour complete excursion, which adds the caves of the East side (Levante) with their characteristic blue and green reflections. The sunset navigation is a suggestive alternative for those visiting Leuca during the summer months.
Departure is from the Port of Santa Maria di Leuca, with a meeting at the Bar del Porto at least fifteen minutes before.
