Origin of the name and history
Porcinara Cave is not like the other caves in Leuca. It wasn’t carved by the sea; it was carved by humans. Located twenty meters above the water level, overlooking the cliffs of the West side (Ponente), it functioned for centuries as a true open-air sanctuary: an altar on the sea where sailors, pilgrims, and local populations stopped to pray before facing the crossing of the Ionian Sea.
The name likely derives from the Latin “porcus,” linked to the ritual sacrifices practiced there, or from a local dialectal distortion of the place. Inside, thirty votive tablets with inscriptions in Greek and Latin have been found — dedications to pagan deities such as Zeus and Batas — confirming a sacred use that continued for centuries, from the Messapian age until the Roman era.

What makes this cave special
Porcinara Cave is the only cave in Leuca that is not of natural origin. The walls still bear the marks of the tools used to dig it: regular grooves and rectangular niches where offerings were placed. The thirty votive inscriptions, engraved directly into the rock, represent the largest epigraphic archive ever found in a cave in Salento.
The location is spectacular. Overlooking the Ionian Sea, the cave faces west and at sunset it fills with a golden light that illuminates the carved walls. From here, you can see the open sea all the way to the horizon without obstacles — the same view seen by the Greek and Roman sailors who came to invoke protection before setting sail.
Unlike the sea caves, Porcinara is also accessible by land via a path that descends from the cliff. This makes it visitable regardless of sea conditions and allows you to stay as long as you wish to observe the inscriptions and the structure of the cavity.
How to visit the Porcinara Cave

The Porcinara Cave can be visited in two ways. By land, by following the path that starts from the Punta Ristola area and descends along the cliff to the cave entrance. The route is not long but requires suitable shoes and a bit of caution on the steeper sections. By sea, during boat excursions: the boat passes below the cave, and the captain points it out and shares its history, but it is not possible to disembark from the boat to visit it internally.
Those who want to see the inscriptions up close must reach it on foot. Access is free and open to the public. There are no opening hours or tickets. It is recommended to visit in the late afternoon, when the sunset light enters directly into the cavity and illuminates the carved walls.
Boat excursions that pass in front of the Porcinara Cave:
- 3-hour double-side Tour — covers both East and West sides, passing in front of Porcinara along the Ionian coast
- Sunset Tour — the sunset light illuminates the cave from the sea, with an aperitif on board
