Excursions in Salento
TREKKING IN SALENTO. EXCURSIONS AND TOURS IN SALENTO
Walking towards Capo di Leuca in the Otranto-Leuca Regional Natural Park offers a continuous alternation of breathtaking views, natural landscapes overlooking the sea, expanses of centuries-old olive trees, rural buildings, and ancient villages—an experience that remains unforgettable in the mind and heart of every trekker.
– Ancient Mannuta Trail (5km): perched over the sea along the Adriatic coast, lush vegetation, and unspoiled nature.
Along the coast east of S.M. di Leuca, where the highest cliffs of Salento overlook the deep, dark sea, the ancient rocks and rugged trails of this part of the coastline tell the story of the land and bear witness to its long geological history. On a cliff completely hidden from the coastal road above, revealing all its splendor only from the waters that gently lap against it—or at times, with extreme force—shaping its form and appearance over millennia.
– Ciolo Trails (3km): The charm of the Ciolo Canyon and its ancient prehistoric caves.
The trail connects Ciolo with the small village of Porto Vecchio in Novaglie. The hike lasts about an hour and is easily accessible, even for children!
In ancient times, this path was used by merchants transporting goods such as salt and fabrics from the ports to the inland areas of Salento.
– Cipolliane Caves Trail (3km): A scenic and easy route leading to the stunning caves of the same name.
Trekking enthusiasts will have no difficulty covering the 2.5 km of the Cipolliane Trail. Even those less experienced but accustomed to long walks in nature will complete the route in about an hour.
– Salt Routes Trail (6km): History, tradition, and breathtaking views surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation.
A varied trail with some more challenging sections due to elevation changes, as the path winds through shrubs with ease.
Location: Funnu Vojere – Corsano (Le)
Among cliffs, terraces, and trails overlooking the Adriatic, hidden pools where salt was once processed—an object of smuggling—can be rediscovered.
The area is home to various rock-dwelling plant species and birdlife.
– The Southeast Trail (83km): A multi-route itinerary in the Natural Park, exploring the Adriatic coastline of Salento.
The Southeast Trail, the longest trekking excursion on Salento’s ancient paths, is perhaps the most unique and beautiful, both scenically and environmentally.
Suspended between the most beautiful sea of the Adriatic basin and the ancient rural landscape, it offers a collection of unique sights and experiences.
– Moontrekking (4km): A moonlit trek illuminating the sea on every full moon night. Many of these routes can be combined or transformed into loop trails.
